Thoughts and memories of living and traveling abroad

Sweet or Savory?

So apparently the Dutch are famous for their pancakes.  Two weekends ago we decided to check it out. We knew of a place by Cafe Panorama called Sara’s Pancake House so we went there.

Oh man. First of all the selection was absurd. Over 80 pancakes and omelets to choose from.  And second of all it could easily be turned into a sugar overload as opposed to a tasty breakfast. And you can choose from sweet or savory pancakes. Huh? The place was packed and we quickly learned this was a one woman show handling the customers. Sara seemed to be cooking. Only makes sense, right? We also seemed to learn this is a touristy spot as most of the other diners were speaking English. It is right by the Anne Frank House so seems about right. It was actually kind of weird being somewhere and everyone is speaking your language!

So when it was our time to order, Heath went straight for the sugar overload and I tried to stay with tasty breakfast. I guess I got both!

Heath got the crepes with banana, chocolate syrup and whipped cream. Oh, and a hot chocolate.

oh man

oh man

I went with the poffertjes.* They are sort of like mini pancakes but much sweeter. I had them with butter and powdered sugar.

delicious

They were delicious! I wanted about twice as many though. Heath really enjoyed his crepe, too. Writing this and remembering how good it was is making me hungry!

We decided to walk off our breakfast and started wandering around. Right by the pancake house is a cool drum store we’ll have to check out when my brothers come visit.

bang bang

And look how much these buildings are leaning!

look out!

lean wit me

It was a great morning! We’ll have to try another menu item some other time. Of course, we’ll have to go about 2 hours before we’re actually hungry. 😉
